So I finally finished Tales of the Abyss!! yay!
The final boss battle was mega hard 🙁 It was unfortunate, but I felt like I had to go grind a couple of levels, which I think helped a little.
81 hours in total spent on that game LOL (the game came out around November last year)
I enjoyed the characters and story, but this game only reinforces my view of real-time combat systems – I still don’t like them. And I don’t like that you can only control 1 character at a time. I’d probably enjoy the Tales series more if it was turn based and I could then issue commands to each party member – oh well.
The only other aspect that kinda annoyed me was the skits – or more correctly, how they were presented. The skits themselves were fine, but they were auto timed so you had to read them quickly sometimes or if you looked away for a second you could miss a sentence. This part should’ve been changed to allow button press to progress the conversation.
One other thing that annoyed me relating to combat, is that it wasn’t very clear on how to activate the special attacks. I only worked out how to do the special attacks when I was just over three-quarters of the way through the game!
On the presentation front, the port has been done well on the 3DS. The 3D effect works really well and I had it turned on throughout the whole game. I didn’t find it disruptive at all. Anime cutscenes were 2D though – but I wish they had subtitles! As voices in the anime cutscenes were quieter and would be hard to make out if the environment around you is a little loud. But otherwise, the game looks really good. There were some noticeable texture quality issues, but that reminded me of how some PSP games had that too (which only affects the environmental graphics, like buildings etc). Character models were all well made in the game and quite detailed.
Anyways, I thought it was a good game, but I don’t know if I’ll play another Tales game. I don’t like the real-time combat system.
